Man Receives GH₵7,200 via Mobile Money, Withdraws Everything, But What Happened Next Surprised Him
A man from Ashaiman has reportedly refunded GH₵7,200 to a businesswoman after mistakenly receiving the money through a Mobile Money transaction and allegedly withdrawing the funds shortly afterward.
According to a report by Ghpage, the incident began when Akua Serwaa, a small-scale business owner from Cape Coast, attempted to transfer money from her bank account to her Mobile Money wallet. However, she reportedly entered the wrong recipient details, causing the entire amount to be sent to an unintended number.
Serwaa discovered the error when she attempted to pay a supplier and realised that her Mobile Money balance had been depleted. She immediately contacted her bank in an effort to reverse the transaction but was reportedly informed that the recipient had already withdrawn the money.
Determined to recover her savings, she shared details of the incident in a Facebook group, attracting support from users who helped trace the phone number to the Zenu area of Ashaiman. Her attempts to contact the recipient through calls and messages reportedly went unanswered.
She subsequently reported the matter to the Tema Community One Police Station. The case was then referred to the Ghana Police Service’s Cybercrime Unit for further investigation.
Investigators reportedly found that the Mobile Money account was registered in the name of a university student but was allegedly being operated by her boyfriend, who works as a motorbike rider.
The matter gained wider attention after social media users circulated photographs of the man, while some community members reportedly helped confirm his identity. Amid growing public attention, he appeared before the local chief on Sunday, accompanied by elders, and returned the full GH₵7,200 to Serwaa.
The man also reportedly apologised publicly, expressing regret over his handling of the money and promising not to repeat the conduct.
The incident has generated online discussions about Mobile Money security, accountability and the risks associated with mistaken transfers. Some users praised the community’s efforts in helping Serwaa recover her funds.
Authorities continue to advise mobile payment users to verify recipient details carefully before confirming transactions. People who mistakenly send money are also encouraged to contact their service providers and report the matter promptly to the appropriate authorities.
