Go and find out whether the receipts are fake – MP tells Ablakwa’s critics

Akwatia MP Bernard Bediako has defended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the accounting of funds used to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa, saying the ministry provided receipts for payments made to airlines.

The lawmaker argued that critics should verify the receipts and seek further information before accusing the ministry of financial wrongdoing.

He said the documents presented by the minister included receipts for payments made to Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir and other airlines involved in the evacuation arrangements.

“He provides receipts. He provides receipts from Tanzania, from Egypt, EgyptAir and Atlas,” Bediako said on Metro TV.

He questioned why critics had not contacted the airlines to establish whether the payments reflected in the documents had been received.

“Have you verified from them whether they didn’t receive or the receipts were fake? What is this?” he asked.

Bediako also challenged demands for additional documents, including boarding passes, arguing that receipts showing payments to airlines should be examined as part of the assessment of the expenditure.

“You’ve provided receipts that the people, the EMP, paid this amount of money to Ethiopian Airlines. This is the receipt. The ministry paid this amount of money to EgyptAir. They paid this amount of money to Atlas, to Tanzania. And these are the receipts,” he said.

He accused critics of relying on assumptions rather than verifying the information already made available.

“If you want an exposé, this is not how the honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was doing his work. Go and find out whether the receipts that have been put in the public domain are fake or not,” he said.

Bediako further argued that differences in evacuation records did not, on their own, prove that money had been misappropriated. He said the circumstances surrounding the evacuation, including changes to passenger arrangements, needed to be examined before conclusions were drawn.

He maintained that the ministry had provided information about the people evacuated and the payments made, and that any outstanding questions should be directed to the relevant parties for clarification.
