Memes flood social media as Kenyans make fun of Bayern Munich’s planned match in Nairobi
Memes have flooded social media after President William Ruto announced that German football giants Bayern Munich and Dutch club Ajax will play a friendly match in Nairobi to officially open the newly constructed Raila Odinga International Stadium, formerly Talanta Stadium, on January 5, 2027.
Kenyans on Twitter (KOT), known for their humour, quick reactions and creative memes whenever major announcements are made, wasted no time turning the news into jokes about what the visiting football stars could experience in Kenya.
In a recorded announcement on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in Moscow on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Ruto confirmed the planned fixture as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania prepare their stadium infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Come fifth January 2027, we will open this stadium with a historic match between two giants of European football, FC Bayern Munich of Germany and AFC Ajax of Amsterdam,” Ruto said.
One meme that stood out was captioned, “Harry Kane after meeting Wepesi at Dandora Stadium.” The AI-generated image showed a man running away with what appeared to be a ball as England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane tried to stop him.
Dandora is a Nairobi neighbourhood, and the joke played on the area’s reputation for insecurity. Although the scene was not real, the image gave social media users a humorous take on what the visiting football stars might encounter during their stay in Kenya.
Another meme featured a viral Safari Rally driver covered in dust, with the caption, “Olise and Kane in Uganda because Olise was so nonchalant to ask for directions to Raila Odinga stadium.”
A third meme imagined Kane after tasting chapati and beans for the first time. The video showed a man who appeared to be experiencing stomach discomfort, with the caption linking the scene to the popular Kenyan meal.
Chapati and beans is a common meal sold at roadside kibandas, with a serving sometimes available for as little as Ksh80. The meme used the familiar local food to imagine how the visiting footballer might react to Kenyan cuisine.
As Kenyans await the January fixture, the memes show how KOT has turned the announcement into an online comedy moment. From jokes about security and directions to local food, users have found different ways to imagine the football stars’ visit to Nairobi.
