Wontumi Reports Alleged Poison Plot By Five Inmates At Nsawam Prison
Former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly informed his spokesperson about an alleged plot by five inmates to poison him while he is serving his prison sentence at Nsawam.
Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, Wontumi’s spokesperson, disclosed the allegation during an appearance on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. He said the matter had been brought to the attention of the prison authorities, who had initiated investigations.
According to Dr Boakye Danquah, Wontumi told him that he had received information suggesting that five inmates were planning to poison him while in custody.
The spokesperson said he subsequently contacted the prison commander, who reportedly confirmed that investigations had been ordered. He added that the inmates allegedly linked to the plan had been separated and transferred to different prisons while the matter was being examined.
“He confirmed to me today when he mentioned over the weekend that there were five purported inmates who were planning to poison him,” Dr Boakye Danquah said.
He added that the investigation was ongoing, with the authorities expected to establish the facts surrounding the allegation.
The alleged plot has not been independently verified, and no further details have been provided about the evidence supporting the claim or the identities of the inmates involved.
Dr Boakye Danquah also sought to reassure supporters about the politician’s condition, saying Wontumi was doing well and remained in good spirits.
He indicated that the former regional NPP chairman was hopeful that his bail application would be granted as he pursues an appeal against his conviction and sentence.
Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of allowing mining operations on his Samreboi concession without the consent of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. He is appealing the conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal while seeking temporary release.
Beyond the reported security concern, Dr Boakye Danquah reiterated Wontumi’s call for reforms to Ghana’s prison system. He said the proposed changes should place greater emphasis on the welfare of inmates, rehabilitation and their eventual reintegration into society.
For now, the alleged poisoning plan remains under investigation, and confirmation from the prison authorities would be necessary to establish the circumstances of the reported threat.
