Rent Prices In Accra And Other Parts Of Ghana Are Already Ridiculous—Bongo

According to a Post on Bongo Ideas official facebook account on Wednesday, October 28,2026,Ghanaian social commentator Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, has thrown his support behind the Rent Commissioner’s reported plan to name and shame landlords who demand rent payments in US dollars, describing the proposed action as a necessary step towards addressing Ghana’s housing challenges.

In a Facebook post reacting to the announcement, Bongo Ideas questioned why landlords operating in Ghana and building properties within the country would insist on receiving rent in a foreign currency.

“We’ll name and shame landlords charging rent in dollars,” the Rent Commissioner was quoted as saying, a statement that drew support from the commentator.

Expressing his approval, Bongo Ideas questioned whether Ghanaian tenants should be expected to pay rent in dollars when their homes and landlords are based in the country.

“How can a landlord be living in Ghana, building houses in Ghana, yet demanding rent in US dollars? Are we in Accra or New York?” he asked.

The social commentator also highlighted the growing difficulty many ordinary Ghanaians face in securing decent and affordable accommodation, arguing that demands for rent in foreign currencies could add to the financial pressure on tenants.

According to him, rental prices in Accra and other parts of the country are already beyond the reach of many residents, making it necessary for authorities to take action against practices that further complicate access to housing.

Bongo Ideas praised the Rent Commissioner’s determination to address the issue, saying the initiative could produce meaningful results if it receives adequate security, institutional support and strict enforcement.
