Wontumi allegedly targeted in prison poisoning attempt – Palgrave

Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some inmates attempted to poison the politician while he was in prison.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, October 27, Dr. Boakye-Danquah said the alleged incident occurred within the past week.

He disclosed this as Wontumi marked 100 days in prison, adding that the politician informed him about the incident when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

According to the aide, prison authorities have initiated investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged poisoning attempt.

“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah said he had spoken to the prison commander, who assured him that the matter was being investigated.

He added that the authorities were expected to provide further information after establishing the facts.

However, the aide did not disclose details about how the alleged incident occurred or identify the inmates suspected of being involved.

He also reiterated Wontumi’s call for reforms in Ghana’s prison system, stressing the need to prioritise rehabilitation, improve conditions for inmates and support their reintegration into society.

Wontumi is serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction for permitting mining activities on his Samreboi concession without approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The former Ashanti Regional NPP chairman is challenging his conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal and is seeking temporary release while the appeal is pending.
