Ghana prepared to respond to possible Ebola outbreak — Akandoh
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Ghanaians that the country is ready to respond to a possible Ebola outbreak.
He said measures have been put in place to detect and manage suspected cases.
His assurance comes after Nigeria confirmed its first laboratory-confirmed Ebola case on October 20, 2026. The World Health Organisation confirmed the case in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during a visit to the Accra International Airport, Mr Akandoh said Ghana had installed thermal scanners and introduced electronic health declaration forms.
He added that laboratory testing and isolation facilities were also available to help manage suspected cases.
“I instructed for the installation of the Thermal scanners, and today it is in place. I also have instructed for the electronic declaration forms, we amended the form, and made some inputs. When it comes to testing, we are also ready; Noguchi is there, the Reference lab is also there, we have the Infectious Disease Center and some others. In terms of isolation and treatment, we are ready,” he said.
Mr Akandoh said Ghana would also improve disease monitoring, contact tracing and screening at the country’s entry points. These measures are aimed at detecting cases early and preventing the disease from spreading.
He urged the public to remain calm and assured Ghanaians that the country had measures in place to manage any confirmed Ebola case.
