Kenya Faces Possible Fuel Shortages as Dealers Clash With EPRA Over Wholesale Prices

Kenya could face fuel supply disruptions after independent petroleum dealers threatened to suspend purchases from oil marketing companies accused of selling fuel above regulated wholesale prices.

The Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya (POAK) and the Kenya Independent Petroleum Dealers Association (KIPEDA) raised the concerns in a joint statement issued on October 27, 2026. They accused some oil marketers of ignoring price limits set by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The dealers said the alleged violations had made it difficult for independent petrol stations to replenish their stocks while selling fuel at regulated retail prices. They warned that some outlets were already experiencing shortages and could be forced to close or operate at a loss.

Under the current pricing guidelines for Nairobi, the maximum wholesale prices are KSh 211.80 per litre for petrol, KSh 212.60 for diesel and KSh 204.79 for kerosene.

The associations have urged independent dealers to stop buying fuel from suppliers charging above the official wholesale limits. They have also called on EPRA and the State Department for Petroleum to investigate the allegations and take action against any companies found violating the rules.

If the dispute continues, motorists, transport operators and businesses could face difficulties accessing fuel, particularly in areas served by independent stations.

The associations say they remain open to talks with authorities to resolve the dispute and restore normal supply.
