Nabii Nabwera to ditch his Lugari MP seat, eyes Deputy Governor position
Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera is reportedly plotting to abandon his parliamentary seat and deputise Kakamega County Women Representative Elsie Muhanda in the 2027 gubernatorial race slated for August 10, 2027.
Sources close to the legislator indicate that Nabwera has warmed up to the idea of being Muhanda’s running mate, banking on a political gamble that the Women Rep will only serve one term and pave way for him to take over the county’s top seat in 2032.
Nabwera has in recent months been unusually vocal in campaigning for Muhanda’s gubernatorial bid, raising eyebrows in Lugari where constituents accuse him of absconding his legislative duties to play county politics.
While it remains unclear what has informed the drastic decision, voters on the ground say the move reeks of panic and political survival. The first-term MP’s popularity has taken a nosedive in Lugari, with many residents faulting him for being inaccessible, underwhelming in development and more present in Kakamega town politics than in his constituency.
Electorates believe Nabwera has read the writing on the wall – that defending the Lugari seat in 2027 would be an uphill task, and the deputy governor slot offers a softer landing.
The Nabwera-Muhanda ticket, if it materializes, would be a calculated Luhya North alliance aimed at consolidating votes from Lugari, Likuyani and Matete sub-counties. Muhanda, who is serving her first term as Woman Rep, is positioning herself as the first female governor of Kakamega.
Neither Nabwera nor Muhanda has officially confirmed the alliance, but insiders say talks are at an advanced stage.
