DCI Warns Kenyans as It Reveals Arrest of Suspect Involed in Fraudulent Investment Scheme

Kenyans have been warned to exercise caution when dealing with investment opportunities promising high returns after detectives arrested a man linked to an alleged KSh4.95 million fraud involving Forex and cryptocurrency trading.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of Harrison Njeru Muthika following investigations into a complaint by a man who claimed he had lost millions of shillings after being persuaded to invest in the two ventures.

According to detectives, the complainant allegedly sent a total of KSh4.95 million to the suspect through several transactions made between April 30 and July 2, 2025.

The money was reportedly sent on the promise that it would be invested in Forex and cryptocurrency trading, which have attracted growing interest from Kenyans looking for ways to earn money.

However, the matter later came under investigation after the complainant reported the alleged fraud to the authorities.

Detectives from the Nairobi Regional Headquarters took up the case and conducted investigations into the claims.

The file was subsequently reviewed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), paving the way for a court to issue a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.

Muthika was later apprehended and is currently being held in custody ahead of his expected appearance at the Milimani Law Courts.

He is expected to face charges related to cheating, operating a collective investment scheme without approval, fraudulently inducing trading in securities, and acquiring and using proceeds of crime.

The charges are allegations that will be determined through the court process.

In its statement, the DCI urged Kenyans to be careful before handing over their money to individuals or companies offering investment opportunities, particularly in Forex and cryptocurrency trading.

The agency cautioned the public against being easily convinced by promises of lucrative returns without first establishing whether an investment venture is genuine and properly authorised.

The arrest comes as a reminder to investors to verify the legitimacy of investment schemes before committing their hard-earned money, as failure to conduct proper checks could expose them to significant financial losses.
