Ruto Opens Magadi to Five New Firms in Push to End Raw Soda Ash Exports
President William Ruto has ordered the entry of up to five new companies into Kenya’s magadi, or soda ash, sector in a move aimed at increasing competition, boosting local processing and creating more value from the country’s mineral resources.
The directive is expected to challenge the established order in the industry and create opportunities for new investors seeking to participate in the extraction and processing of soda ash.
Ruto has called for an end to the export of raw soda ash, insisting that Kenya should process the mineral locally before selling it to international markets.
The President’s position reflects the government’s broader push to promote value addition in the mining sector, increase industrial production and ensure the country benefits more from its natural resources.
Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate, is an important industrial mineral used in glass manufacturing, detergents, chemicals and other industrial applications.
By encouraging local processing, the government hopes to support manufacturing, attract investment, create employment opportunities and increase earnings from mineral exports.
Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has been tasked with driving the value-addition agenda and helping implement the government’s plans for the sector.
The proposed entry of new firms could introduce fresh investment and competition while expanding Kenya’s capacity to process soda ash into higher-value products.
However, the implementation of the directive will depend on the relevant licensing, regulatory and investment arrangements.
The government’s plan signals a renewed focus on moving beyond the export of raw materials towards a more industrialised economy in which Kenyan industries process local resources and capture a greater share of the value chain.
Further details on the companies expected to enter the sector, the licensing process and the implementation timeline remain important as the proposal progresses.
