Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma Reveals Who She Blames for the Crackdown on March and March
March and March Movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has accused the ANC-led government of attempting to silence her organisation amid growing tensions over immigration enforcement and the movement’s right to protest.
In a statement, Ngobese-Zuma claimed that police had informed the movement of their intention to approach the courts regarding its demonstrations. She expressed concern that the proposed legal action could undermine the organisation’s constitutional right to peaceful protest.
The activist further alleged that a specialised prosecution unit had been established at the Durban Magistrates’ Court to handle cases involving March and March members. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
Ngobese-Zuma insisted that the alleged developments would not discourage her from speaking out against what she views as the suppression of citizens demanding stricter immigration enforcement.
She accused the government of treating protesters unfairly, warning that attempts to restrict demonstrations could threaten democratic freedoms. She maintained that South Africans should be allowed to challenge government policies and raise community concerns without fearing retaliation.
The movement’s leader also criticised the alleged expenditure on efforts to restrict the organisation, arguing that resources should instead be directed towards improving border security.
March and March has organised demonstrations calling for stricter immigration controls and action against undocumented foreign nationals.
Although the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, demonstrations remain subject to applicable legal requirements. The circumstances surrounding the alleged court action and prosecution arrangements remain unclear as the dispute continues.
