Tlhopie Motsepe Sends Message to Miguel Cardoso After Sundowns Exit
Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has applauded his players for their impressive defensive display after the Angolan club achieved a historic milestone by knocking Mamelodi Sundowns out of the CAF Champions League and qualifying for the group stage for the first time.
Wiliete earned a 1-1 draw against the South African side at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night, securing progression through the away-goals rule after the first leg in Lubango finished goalless. The outcome stunned Sundowns, who had entered the two-legged contest as favourites to advance.
The hosts started strongly, with Tashreeq Matthews finding the net in the 11th minute to give Sundowns an early advantage. However, Wiliete responded after the interval when Cristóvão “Mabululu” Paciência took advantage of a defensive error by Cassius Mailula to restore parity in the 48th minute.
Although Sundowns controlled much of the possession and recorded 18 shots compared with Wiliete’s six, they were unable to find another goal. The Angolan visitors maintained their defensive structure, limiting their opponents’ opportunities and holding firm until the final whistle.
Bianchi was particularly pleased with his team’s discipline and commitment throughout the encounter. He recognised that facing an experienced opponent like Sundowns required his players to remain organised, follow their tactical instructions and defend collectively under sustained pressure.
The coach also appreciated the importance of making their limited attacking opportunities count. Wiliete’s equaliser proved decisive, allowing them to progress despite Sundowns enjoying greater possession and producing more attempts at goal.
Eliminating Sundowns away from home represents a significant achievement for Wiliete, giving the club a major boost as it prepares for its first appearance in the Champions League group stage. The historic qualification also demonstrates the potential of the Angolan side to compete against more established teams on the continental stage.
For Sundowns, however, the defeat represents a serious disappointment. Their elimination marks their earliest exit from the CAF Champions League in 11 years, raising questions about the team’s performance and continental ambitions.
