Ghana, United Nations mark 81st UN Day with flag-raising ceremony in Accra

Ghana and the United Nations have commemorated the 81st United Nations Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the forecourt of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, reaffirming their commitment to global peace, sustainable development and international cooperation.

The ceremony brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the United Nations, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, students and development partners.

According to a Facebook post by the United Nations in Ghana, the event was led by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, and the UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Zia Choudhury.

Activities marking the commemoration included an inspection of a parade, the raising of flags and the reading of a message from the United Nations Secretary-General.

The event provided an opportunity for Ghana and the United Nations to reaffirm their shared commitment to multilateralism and collective efforts to address global challenges.

The United Nations in Ghana highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the government, diplomatic missions and development partners in promoting peace and advancing sustainable development.

The commemoration also underscored Ghana’s longstanding relationship with the United Nations and its participation in international efforts to promote peace, security and development.

United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.

The 2026 celebration marks 81 years since the establishment of the global organisation, which continues to promote international peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.
