Chairman Wontumi Arrives at Accra High Court Under Tight Security

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, appeared at the Accra High Court on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, under tight security in connection with the ongoing Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank fraud case.

A video of his arrival showed the former regional chairman being transported in a silver pickup truck, seated between two officers of the Ghana Prisons Service.

The vehicle was accompanied by a convoy that included other pickup trucks carrying heavily armed security personnel, highlighting the security arrangements surrounding his court appearance.

Wontumi’s appearance comes amid public speculation about his health while in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where he is reportedly serving a prison sentence following a conviction in an illegal mining-related case.

However, details about his current health condition were not established in the information available.

The EXIM Bank case centres on an alleged GH¢30 million loan facility obtained in 2018 to finance a proposed agricultural project by Wontumi Farms Limited.

Wontumi is standing trial alongside his company, Wontumi Farms Limited, and his associate, Thomas Antwi Boasiako, who is reportedly at large.

According to the prosecution, the loan facility was secured through alleged false representations and forged or altered documents. The prosecution further alleges that the proposed farming activities were not carried out as represented, agricultural machinery was not purchased, and the expected workers were not employed.

The state also alleges that funds withdrawn from the company’s accounts were used for personal purposes and investments in other businesses rather than being applied to the intended agricultural project.

Wontumi faces five charges in the case: defrauding by false pretences, two counts of uttering forged documents, money laundering, and intentionally causing financial loss of GH¢30 million to a public body.

The former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty, according to the information provided. The allegations therefore remain subject to determination by the court.

The case has attracted public attention because of the amount involved and Wontumi’s prominent position in Ghanaian politics.

His latest court appearance adds another development to the ongoing legal proceedings, as the court continues to consider the allegations against him and the evidence presented by the prosecution and defence.

Further updates are expected as proceedings in the EXIM Bank case continue.
