Big Drama in Bungoma as prominent Leader is Chased From Podium for Chanting ‘Ruto Tutam’ at Funeral

Drama and tension filled the air in Bungoma County after a woman was forcefully chased away from the podium during a burial ceremony.

The incident happened over the weekend in Bumula Constituency. According to a report by Kenyan Report, the woman had been given a chance to address mourners when she mentioned the controversial slogan “Ruto Tutam”.

The phrase “Tutam” is a political slogan used by a section of Kenyans who are opposed to President William Ruto’s second term bid. It is the opposite of “Two Term” which is used by the President’s supporters.

As soon as the woman mentioned the slogan, Bumula Member of Parliament, Hon. Jack Wamboka, who was among the leaders present, stood up and intervened.

The MP is seen in a video that has gone viral ordering the woman to leave the podium immediately. The woman was forced to cut short her speech as the MP took over the microphone.

The action by the MP has caused a huge debate on social media. The video has attracted thousands of comments from Kenyans with different opinions.

Some Kenyans have supported the MP. They argue that funerals are sacred events and should not be turned into political battlegrounds. They say leaders must respect the grieving family and avoid bringing divisive politics to burial ceremonies.

However, another group has condemned the MP’s action. They argue that every Kenyan has a right to freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Constitution. They say chasing a woman away from the podium was disrespectful and humiliating.

They also argue that in Western Kenya, funerals are the only place where ordinary citizens get a chance to speak directly to their elected leaders, since many leaders are not accessible.

The debate around “Two Term” vs “Tutam” has become very sensitive in Bungoma and the larger Western region. Politicians are now careful about what is said on the podium.

Up to now, Hon. Jack Wamboka has not released an official statement to explain why he chased the woman away.

What do you think? Was the MP right to chase the woman away or should freedom of speech be respected even at funerals? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
