“Touch Afenyo-Markin and Face Ghanaians” — Appiagyei Sends Strong Warning
A fresh warning from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament has brought renewed attention to the position of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, following claims that some people may be planning to remove him from the position.
Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Patricia Appiagyei has strongly rejected the claims, insisting that there are no secret meetings aimed at removing Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
According to her, the Minority Leader continues to have the support of the caucus, especially because of the way he has handled the Minority’s work in Parliament despite its limited numbers.
“Anyone who attempts to remove Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader will face the anger of Ghanaians.”
The statement is likely to attract attention within the NPP, particularly at a time when internal disagreements and questions about leadership can easily become a major political issue.
Afenyo-Markin, who represents the Effutu constituency, has been one of the most visible figures on the Minority side of Parliament. Since taking up the Minority Leader position, he has frequently led the caucus on major parliamentary matters and has been a strong voice in debates involving the government.
Appiagyei praised his efforts and pointed to the difficult situation facing the Minority caucus. With the Minority having fewer numbers in Parliament, leading the group effectively requires careful political strategy and strong coordination among its members.
Her comments also appear to be aimed at stopping speculation before it grows into a bigger internal problem. Rumours about possible leadership changes can create tension within political parties, especially when they involve senior lawmakers.
For some NPP supporters, the Deputy Minority Leader’s defence of Afenyo-Markin may be seen as an important show of unity. Others, however, may still want clearer information about the alleged meetings and whether any genuine concerns exist within the caucus.
The controversy also highlights the wider pressure on the NPP as it works to rebuild itself after its defeat in the 2024 general election. Parliamentary leadership has become an important part of that process, with the Minority expected to challenge the government while also keeping its own members united.
