He started farming at 13 with one cow, today he owns 790 hectares and over 300 cattle

Thabo Dithakgwe, a livestock farmer from Morokweng in South Africa’s North West province, has built an impressive agricultural business from humble beginnings, proving that determination and patience can turn a small opportunity into a thriving enterprise.

Thabo’s farming journey began when he was just 13 years old. His father gave him a pregnant cow, a simple gift that would eventually become the foundation of his successful livestock business.

When the cow gave birth, Thabo raised the calf before selling it to another farmer. Instead of spending the money, he wisely reinvested the proceeds into expanding his livestock operations.

Over the years, his commitment and business-minded approach helped him grow from owning a single cow to managing an extensive farming enterprise.

Today, Thabo owns a 790-hectare farm where he raises cattle, goats and sheep. His livestock operation includes more than 300 cattle, among them Bonsmara cattle, a popular South African breed known for its suitability to local farming conditions.

Some of his Bonsmara cattle reportedly fetch more than R90,000 each at auctions, highlighting the value of his investment and the progress he has made.

Thabo’s remarkable journey demonstrates the importance of starting small, managing resources wisely and reinvesting profits. His story serves as an inspiration to young South Africans interested in agriculture and entrepreneurship.
