Early Life Of Ibrahim Mahama Before Entering Business Revealed
Ghanaian entrepreneur Ibrahim Mahama was born on January 29, 1971, in Piase, located in the Northern Region of Ghana. He is widely recognised for establishing Engineers & Planners, a major indigenous-owned company that provides equipment and operational services to the mining sector. He is the younger brother of former President John Dramani Mahama.
His family background combines public service with commercial experience. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, made history as the first Minister of State for the Northern Region during the administration of President Kwame Nkrumah. His mother, Joyce Tamakloe, was involved in business and hailed from Keta in the Volta Region.
Mahama began his educational journey at Tamale Senior High School. He subsequently moved to Britain to study at the College of North London, but his academic path took a different direction when he chose to leave during his third year to concentrate on business opportunities.
During his time in London, he worked for a property development firm, where he acquired valuable practical knowledge about managing businesses and understanding commercial investments. This experience helped shape his interest in entrepreneurship and influenced his decision to establish a business of his own.
His return to Ghana in 1997 marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial venture. At 26, he founded Engineers & Planners, initially operating with just one piece of heavy-duty equipment that he had acquired from Scotland.
From those modest beginnings, the company gradually expanded its operations, building a reputation for providing machinery and specialised services to mining companies. Its growth helped establish it among the leading indigenous-owned mining services businesses in West Africa.
Engineers & Planners has since become an important contributor to Ghana’s mining industry, with a workforce exceeding 3,000 employees.
Mahama’s business story illustrates his transition from working in the United Kingdom to building a substantial enterprise in Ghana. His experience also highlights the role of local entrepreneurs in developing domestic businesses, creating employment and supporting the country’s mining operations.
