Opinion: Tusker’s CAF Confederation Cup Exit Is a Reality Check as Tanzania Pulls Ahead

Tusker FC’s CAF Confederation Cup exit should hurt. Not just because the Brewers missed the group stage, but because it exposes the growing gap between Kenyan football and our neighbors.
Tusker drew 1-1 with Singida Black Stars in Dar es Salaam but bowed out 2-1 on aggregate after losing the first leg 1-0 in Nairobi. The damage was done at home, where the Brewers failed to show the urgency needed for a continental contest.
Coach Julien Mette admitted as much. He believes Tusker were the better team, but regrets their lifeless first-leg performance. His message was simple: at this level, chances must be taken when they come.
That is the lesson. Good football is not just about possession, pretty passing or dominating opponents. It is about delivering when the stakes are high.

Meanwhile, Tanzania has reason to celebrate, with four clubs reportedly reaching the group stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. This should be a wake-up call for Kenya.
There was a time when Tanzanian football looked across the border at Kenya with admiration. Today, the tables have turned. We cannot live on past glory while our neighbours make continental progress.
The solution is not to mock our clubs or abandon them when they fail. Kenyan football needs better planning, stronger club management, competitive investment, quality coaching and consistent youth development. The league must become a serious platform for preparing teams to face Africa’s best.

Fans also have a role. Support local football, fill the terraces and demand accountability without killing the game with endless negativity.
Tusker can still fight for domestic silverware, as Mette insists. But winning at home must become a stepping stone, not the final ambition.
Kenya must wake up. Our neighbors are moving, and nostalgia will not qualify us for Africa’s big stage.
