“The Driver Looked Tired and Sleepy” Survivor Reveals What Happened Before Crash That Killed 24
A survivor of the deadly accident along the Mombasa Nairobi Highway has claimed that the bus driver appeared tired and sleepy before colliding head on with a truck, killing 24 people.
Pastor Cosmas Nyangweso, who survived the Sunday crash, said the journey from western Kenya had been long and the driver seemed exhausted. He is receiving treatment for broken arms at Mtito Andei Sub County Hospital.
Nyangweso was among worshippers from the Christian Renewal Centre in Likoni, Mombasa, who had travelled to Makusi, Kakamega County, to bury their colleague, the late Reverend Kiganane.
According to the pastor, the journey initially went well despite the long distance.
However, tragedy struck after the bus left a stopover in Mtito Andei at around 7am as the group headed back to Mombasa.
He alleged that the driver attempted to overtake several vehicles along the Kanga section of the highway before the bus veered to the right and crashed into an oncoming truck.
The collision was so severe that passengers were thrown out of the bus, leaving several people dead and others injured.Nyangweso recalled finding himself among dead bodies and injured passengers desperately calling for help.
He said rescue assistance took a long time to arrive, leaving survivors distressed as they waited for assistance.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdulahi Khalif said the impact was powerful enough to tear away a large section of the bus.
He urged drivers to avoid driving while exhausted and called on transport companies to provide additional drivers for long journeys to prevent fatigue-related accidents.
Makueni County Chief Officer for Health Dr Mulei Mbithi confirmed that 17 people died at the scene, while seven others later died in hospital.
Sixteen patients remained admitted at Mtito Andei Sub County Hospital, while two were transferred to Makindu Sub County Hospital.
Meanwhile, Pastor Ken Wanga of the Mombasa Pastors Fellowship said the bus carried about 50 people, including 12 pastors.
The fellowship confirmed that three pastors died in the crash.
Church leaders appealed to the government to support affected families and improve road safety along the busy highway.
