0 When it comes to annual vehicle licence renewal, these are SA’s cheapest provinces right now. Image: File Your annual vehicle licence renewal is one of those expenses that’s easy to forget about, but is always there to drain your bank balance at seemingly the most inopportune time. How much you pay for annual vehicle licence renewal in South Africa depends on two things: your vehicle’s tare (empty weight) and the province where it is registered.
And spoiler alert, there’s no single province that’s cheapest for annual vehicle licence renewal. North West, for example, has some of the lowest fees for lighter vehicles. While the Eastern Cape is particularly competitive across mid-weight bands. Unsurprisingly, at the other end of the scale, Gauteng is most expensive for many of the most common vehicle categories.
Cost aside, the good news is that annual vehicle licence renewal no longer has to be an awful queue-fest at your local licencing office. Government’s online NATIS site, allows registered motorists to view renewals, pay online and arrange delivery of their new disc. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) standard transaction fee for the convenience is R72, with delivery generally taking three to five days.
Provincial authorities are allowed to set their own licence tariffs and update them on different schedules. Some fees have remained unchanged for years. Others have increased more recently. And some, like Gauteng, are gazetted for further increases …
For a vehicle weighing between 751 kg and 1 750 kg, North West offers the lowest listed fee in every band. Its R552 fee for the 1 251 to 1 500 kg category, for example, is R138 cheaper than the Eastern Cape and R180 cheaper than the Western Cape.
For vehicles between 1 751 kg and 2 000 kg, North West and the Eastern Cape are almost neck and neck, at R762 and R768 respectively. Gauteng, meanwhile, charges R1 104 for a vehicle in the 1 751 to 2 000 kg band and R1 536 for one in the 2 251 to 2 500 kg band. These are the highest figures in those categories.
Free State revised its annual vehicle licence renewal tariffs on 1 August 2026. Only the lightest band in this comparison remained unchanged at R450. The 1 001 to 1 250 kg band rose from R462 to R480, while the 2 251 to 2 500 kg band increased from R1 164 to R1 212. Meanwhile, Gauteng motorists should also keep an eye on proposed increases. A draft schedule has been reported, but proposed rates are not yet approved.
As ever, South African motorists have a 21-day grace period after the expiry date printed on their current licence disc. After that, late-renewal penalties and arrears may apply. The government advises motorists to renew before expiry rather than relying on the grace period.
