The Man Who Gave Mandela Military Training During Apartheid

The vast majority of people are aware that Nelson Mandela is one of the most talented politicians that the world has ever seen. Together with his other comrades, he was successful in transforming South Africa from a country ruled by apartheid into a democratic society in which all citizens had equal opportunity to tackle the problems of life.

Mandela made the decision to organize uMkhonto we Sizwe as the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1962, at the height of apartheid’s brutality, especially after the Sharpville Massacre. He was then transported to Ethiopia to receive military training as the first uMkhonto soldier. This occurred after the Sharpville Massacre.

Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC) felt obligated to reply to the senseless massacre of blacks in Sharpville, thus they founded uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the ANC’s military arm, in the aftermath of the atrocious massacres that took place in Sharpville. Mandela had to be smuggled out of the country and into Ethiopia so that he could receive military training. This was necessary because none of Mandela’s fellow ANC members had any military training at the time, and the apartheid government would not allow them to receive any.

As soon as Mandela arrived in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie began providing him with the much-required military instruction that he had been lacking. At the time, Ethiopia was the only country in Africa that had not been colonized.

Col. Fekadu Wakenu was the individual who instructed Nelson Mandela in the methods of guerilla warfare, such as how to plant explosives, before stealthily vanishing into the night. Mandela learned these methods from Wakenu.

The help of Emperor Haile Selassie and Colonel Fekadu Wakenu was essential to South Africa’s development into the nation it is today. They deserve every bit of the credit, and may their spirits rest in peace for all of eternity.
