Nairobi: The Painful Words a Businessman Said After His Trapped Wife Was Rescued Alive From Rubble
Details have emerged on the painful words a Nairobi businessman said after his wife, who was trapped beneath debris, was rescued alive after spending more than 30 hours under the wreckage.
During an interview, Sultan revealed that he feared his wife, Zeynab Muhammad, had died while trapped inside the collapsed building. He was overwhelmed with relief when rescuers finally found her alive after hours of uncertainty.
Zeynab was at their shop in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Friday, October 23, when an 18-storey building collapsed.
She remained trapped beneath the debris for more than 30 hours before emergency workers managed to reach her.
Her husband had left her at their ground floor shop in the Isli area to attend Friday afternoon prayers at a nearby mosque.
He had no idea that the building would collapse shortly after his departure.
When Sultan heard about the disaster, he rushed back to the scene, hoping to find his wife safe. However, he arrived to find the building reduced to a huge pile of broken concrete and construction materials. He explained that their shop was located underground, making it difficult to establish what had happened to Zeynab. Despite knowing where their business was situated, he could not immediately find her.
With no news about his wife’s condition, Sultan returned to the mosque to pray as rescue teams searched through the rubble for survivors.
Zeynab later explained that the building collapsed without warning.
Initially, she thought the loud noise came from a fight nearby before realising that the building was falling apart.
During the collapse, she became trapped in a narrow space between two refrigerators inside their shop.
The small gap helped protect her as she spent more than 30 hours in darkness, waiting to be found.
On Saturday evening, rescuers finally reached Zeynab and pulled her out alive without serious injuries.
Sultan was overcome with emotion when he saw his wife again.
After spending hours fearing the worst, he struggled to express his gratitude for her survival.
Her rescue brought hope to other families gathered at the scene, many of whom were still waiting for news about their missing relatives as emergency teams continued searching for survivors.
