Kakai Bisau Hits Out at Natembeya and Sifuna, Accuses Them of Turning Funerals Into Political Stages

Kiminini Member of Parliament Kakai Bisau has criticised Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, accusing them of using funeral gatherings to advance their political interests.

Bisau’s remarks come after a tense exchange with Natembeya during the burial of former Cabinet minister and diplomat Burudi Nabwera in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

The burial ceremony, which was meant to honour the life of the late politician, was briefly disrupted when Bisau attempted to cut short Natembeya’s speech to allow the programme to proceed according to the family’s wishes.

Bisau, who was serving as the master of ceremonies, insisted that the ceremony needed to conclude in time for Nabwera to be buried before 2 p.m., in accordance with the deceased’s wishes.

However, Natembeya continued addressing mourners, leading to a heated exchange between the two leaders. The disagreement intensified when the governor shifted his speech to national politics, criticising President William Ruto’s administration and calling for support for Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.

During the confrontation, Bisau challenged Natembeya over his political remarks and insisted that the burial programme should be respected.

The incident has drawn attention to the growing role of political messaging at funerals, which traditionally provide families and communities with an opportunity to mourn and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

Bisau’s reported criticism that Natembeya and Sifuna were accustomed to disrupting funerals to attract attention reflects his frustration with what he views as the politicisation of solemn occasions.

The controversy also highlights the political divisions emerging in the Western region as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Natembeya has been advocating for opposition unity and has publicly expressed support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. Other leaders have also called for political cooperation in the region.

As political competition intensifies, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting bereaved families and allowing funeral ceremonies to remain focused on honouring the deceased.
