Wontumi’s Health: Abronye Reveals Why NPP Leaders Are Allegedly Keeping Supporters in the Dark

Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has alleged that former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is experiencing health problems while in prison.

Abronye claimed that the party’s leadership was reluctant to disclose Wontumi’s alleged health condition to members and supporters for fear of causing widespread concern within the party.

Speaking on his Ohia TV programme, excerpts of which have circulated on social media, Abronye maintained that Wontumi was unwell in custody and attributed his alleged condition to what he described as false accusations against the former regional chairman.

He further questioned assurances about Wontumi’s wellbeing, insisting that supporters should not assume he was in good health based on statements from party officials or prison authorities.

However, the claims about Wontumi’s health have not been independently verified, and no medical information was provided to substantiate the allegations.

Wontumi has been held at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison following his conviction in July in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of offences connected to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The sentences imposed on the two counts are to run concurrently.

Wontumi has challenged both his conviction and sentence, with his legal team filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, seeking to overturn the High Court’s decision.
