Just Two years Ago,Some Ghanaian Were Paying As Must As GH¢4,200 In E-Levy Charges Under Akufo—Bongo
According to a Post on Bongo Ideas official facebook account on Monday, October 26,2026,Ghanaian social commentator Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, has reignited debate over the economic policies of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, citing the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), betting tax, COVID-19 levy and Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
In a Facebook post, Bongo Ideas argued that Ghanaians should not forget the financial implications of the policies introduced under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, particularly as political discussions continue over its record in office.
He cited the E-Levy, claiming that some Ghanaians paid as much as GH¢4,200 in charges under the previous administration.
According to him, the removal of the levy means that money which would previously have gone towards the tax can now remain in the hands of mobile money users and other individuals affected by the charge.
“These are some of the records the NPP wants us to forgive and forget. Never!” he wrote.
Bongo Ideas also drew attention to the betting tax and the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, questioning the taxes imposed on citizens during the Akufo-Addo administration.
The COVID-19 levy was introduced as part of the government’s revenue measures during the pandemic, while the betting tax formed part of the taxation framework affecting betting and gaming activities.
The commentator further criticised the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, which Ghana implemented in 2022 as part of efforts to restructure its public debt amid a severe economic crisis.
The programme involved changes to the terms of eligible domestic government bonds and affected investors, including pensioners, prompting concerns about returns, income security and the financial implications of the restructuring.
