Makueni Steps In as Mtito Andei Crash Families Face a Double Tragedy

Makueni County Government has moved to cushion families affected by the deadly Mtito Andei road crash after announcing a waiver of hospital, mortuary and postmortem charges for victims of the tragedy.

The decision, announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, comes as families continue to mourn 24 people who lost their lives in the devastating collision along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

The crash occurred at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, on Sunday when a church bus collided with a lorry.

The accident left several other passengers injured, with survivors rushed to various health facilities for urgent medical attention.

According to the county government, the waiver is intended to ease the financial pressure facing families already dealing with the emotional and logistical burden of losing their loved ones.

Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili visited survivors receiving treatment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital, where medical teams have been attending to those injured in the accident.

Hospital officials said the facility received 20 victims, with 10 admitted for further treatment. One patient was placed in the Intensive Care Unit, while three others were referred to different hospitals according to their preferences.

Other survivors underwent surgery and remained under close medical supervision.

The county government also commended healthcare workers and emergency responders for their efforts in rescuing victims and providing immediate medical care following the crash.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about safety along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent weeks.

Mulili called on the national government to consider upgrading the Mombasa Road into a dual carriageway and establishing a trauma centre along the highway.

She said improved infrastructure and access to specialised emergency care could help reduce fatalities when accidents occur.

The deputy governor also urged motorists to exercise greater caution, obey traffic regulations, avoid excessive speed and refrain from driving when fatigued.

Meanwhile, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are expected to continue as authorities seek to establish what caused the collision.

For the bereaved families, however, the county’s decision provides some immediate relief at a painful time.

By covering hospital, mortuary and postmortem expenses, Makueni County has sought to ensure that financial constraints do not add to the suffering caused by one of the region’s most devastating road tragedies.
