JOHNSON ASIEDU: Decades of NDC Service, 17 Years as General Secretary — Is He Presidential Material

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as General Mosquito, has spent several decades serving the National Democratic Congress (NDC), building a political career marked by experience, loyalty, and leadership. His long journey within the party has placed him among the prominent figures in Ghanaian politics.

Asiedu Nketiah began his political journey as a Member of Parliament before rising through the ranks of the NDC. He later became the party’s General Secretary, a position he held for approximately 17 years. During this period, he played an important role in organising the party, managing political activities, and supporting its efforts during elections.

His years as General Secretary allowed him to work closely with several prominent Ghanaian leaders, including the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, and current President John Dramani Mahama. In December 2022, Asiedu Nketiah was elected National Chairman of the NDC after defeating the incumbent chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo. Despite his extensive political experience, Asiedu Nketiah has not held a ministerial appointment. However, his supporters may argue that ministerial experience is not the only measure of leadership, pointing instead to his years of party administration, political organisation, and experience working with different generations of leaders.

His name may therefore arise in discussions about individuals with the political background and leadership experience to consider a future presidential ambition. Nevertheless, presidential suitability involves more than years of service to a political party. It also requires consideration of national leadership, economic policies, governance, and the ability to address the needs of citizens.
