Ruto Reminds Kalonzo of 1992 Support, Asks Him to Return the Favour in 2027

President William Ruto has reminded Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka of the support he gave him during the 1992 General Election, asking him to return the favour by supporting his re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking in Kitui County on Monday, October 26, 2026, Ruto recalled how he campaigned for Kalonzo when he was seeking election as the Member of Parliament for Mwingi North under the Kenya African National Union (KANU).

The President said he was then a member of Youth for KANU ’92 (YK92), a political group formed to campaign for President Daniel Arap Moi’s re-election.

Ruto explained that he travelled to Mwingi to campaign for Kalonzo, who went on to win the parliamentary seat.

“In 1992, I came here to Mwingi to campaign for Kalonzo. I was in YK92 at the time, and I came to campaign for him under the KANU party. He won,” Ruto said.

The President challenged the former Vice President to remember their political history and support him in next year’s elections.“Now tell him to remember me next year. Let him return the favour,” Ruto told the crowd.

Ruto also brought Deputy President Kithure Kindiki into the discussion, saying Kindiki had been part of Kalonzo’s presidential campaign team in 2007.

He questioned why Kalonzo should not consider the past support he had received from both leaders when making his political decisions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The remarks come as political leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the next presidential election, with Ruto seeking to strengthen his support beyond his traditional political strongholds.

Kalonzo, who served as Kenya’s Vice President under President Mwai Kibaki, remains a prominent opposition leader and has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate for the opposition.

His political position could be important as opposition leaders discuss who should lead their campaign against Ruto in 2027.

Ruto’s appeal to Kalonzo highlights how past political relationships are becoming part of the debate as leaders seek alliances ahead of the election.

However, Ruto’s remarks do not amount to a confirmed political agreement between the two leaders. Whether Kalonzo will support the President in 2027 remains to be seen.
