Soldiers Paid “Peanuts” While APC Youth Leader Flaunts Billion-Naira SUVs — Utomi
Professor Pat Utomi has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for distributing luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to selected youth leaders, contrasting the extravagance with what he described as meagre salaries earned by Nigerian soldiers.
Utomi, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed outrage in posts on X, saying:
“Nigerian soldiers are being paid peanuts as salaries, yet an APC youth leader is flaunting SUVs worth billions of naira. This is the same government that told Nigerians there was no longer money in the treasury. At this point, they must think we are fools!”
He further questioned whether the funds could have been better spent on critical sectors like healthcare: “Each of the SUVs in this video costs more than ₦100 million. I wonder how many world-class ambulances the millions being spent on these vehicles could buy. What a pity!”
The remarks followed a video shared by APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, showcasing brand-new 2026 Toyota Prado SUVs reportedly given to youth leaders to aid mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Israel thanked First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her support, pledging that the party would deliver “polling unit by polling unit.”
Though the video was later deleted, it sparked widespread criticism online, with many Nigerians questioning the timing of such lavish spending amid economic hardship under the Tinubu administration’s reforms.
Utomi’s comments add to growing discontent over government spending priorities, with critics highlighting the stark contrast between soldiers’ welfare and the billions channelled into political mobilisation.
