Ministry Unleashes Fierce Crackdown After Kanga Crash Left Kenyan Roads Soaked In Grief
A deadly crash along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Mtito Andei on Sunday left at least 24 people dead. The accident happened in the Kanga area. Transport CS Davis Chirchir has now promised tougher measures to stop the killing on Kenyan roads.
Chirchir said the repeated tragedies are unacceptable. He noted that another crash along the same route claimed 17 lives at Salama on October 3. The CS said the country cannot treat road safety as business as usual.
Preliminary reports show that dangerous overtaking caused the Sunday accident. The Ministry will now work with the National Transport and Safety Authority and the police. Together they will intensify enforcement against speeding, reckless overtaking and other traffic offences.
The Ministry also plans to strengthen the black spot management programme. This programme identifies high-risk road sections so that engineers can fix them. Chirchir said targeted engineering works and other infrastructure improvements will follow.
Drivers will face stricter training and compliance rules. The Ministry wants to improve driver competence and discipline. It also wants every road user to follow safety requirements.
The CS will engage the Judiciary, Parliament and the Senate on several new rules. These include the Commercial Vehicle Regulations 2026, the Vehicle Inspection Regulations 2026 and the School Transport Regulations 2026. He said the rules are critical for vehicle roadworthiness, driver accountability and fatigue management.
The Ministry’s move comes as NTSA and the Motorists Association of Kenya made fresh demands. They want road accidents declared a national disaster. They also want the long overdue dualling of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway fast-tracked.
