Kenya Met List Regions Sets to Receive Heavy Rainfall Starting This Date — Details

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall across several regions, urging residents to prepare for potential flooding, powerful winds and poor visibility.

According to the department’s advisory issued on October 24, with updates reported on October 25, some areas are expected to receive more than 20 millimetres of rain within 24 hours.

The forecast covers the Coastal region, Northeastern Kenya, the highlands on both sides of the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, parts of Nairobi and the Southeastern Lowlands. Rainfall is expected to be most intense from October 26 to 28 before gradually weakening by October 30.

The counties listed include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo.

In the western and Rift Valley regions, the affected counties are Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Nakuru. Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho and Bomet are also under the warning.

The advisory further names Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru in Central Kenya. Narok, Kajiado, parts of Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are also expected to experience rainfall.

The meteorological department cautioned that flooding may affect areas that receive limited rainfall, particularly locations downstream from regions experiencing heavier precipitation.

Residents should avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, stay away from swollen rivers and drainage channels, and seek higher ground when flooding threatens. Drivers are urged to remain alert because heavy rain can make roads dangerous and limit visibility.

Winds exceeding 25 knots are also forecast for coastal, eastern and northern areas.

As the country continues through the October-to-December short rains season, residents are advised to follow official forecasts and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their property.
