Ruto Announces 50,000 Paid Internships Paying Youth Up to KSh25,000 Monthly From January 2027

President William Ruto has announced plans to create 50,000 paid internship opportunities for young Kenyans beginning January 2027, in a move aimed at helping graduates gain work experience as they seek employment.

Speaking during a church service at AIC Kasina Church in Mwingi town on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the President said successful participants would receive monthly stipends ranging from KSh20,000 to KSh25,000.

The programme is expected to target young people completing their studies at universities, colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. It is intended to give them an opportunity to acquire practical skills and workplace experience before pursuing permanent employment.

Ruto said the government planned to increase the number of beneficiaries gradually, with a target of expanding the programme to 100,000 and eventually 200,000 young people within the next two to three years.

He explained that the initiative would help graduates move from education into employment more smoothly, particularly at a time when many young people struggle to secure their first jobs because they lack professional experience.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns about the gap between the number of Kenyans entering the labour market and the availability of formal employment opportunities.

According to figures cited in reports on graduate employment, more than one million young people enter the labour market annually across different education levels, while formal job creation remains considerably lower. The imbalance has increased pressure on the government to develop programmes that can improve access to employment.

Ruto said the broader objective was to harness the abilities, knowledge and energy of young people to support national development while giving them a practical starting point in their careers.

However, the President did not provide detailed information on the application process, the institutions that will coordinate recruitment or the specific workplaces where successful applicants will be posted.

Young people interested in the opportunity will therefore need to wait for official government communication outlining eligibility requirements, application dates and the recruitment procedure.

Ruto Announces Plans to Expand NYOTA Programme

During the same church service, the President also spoke about the government’s NYOTA programme, which supports young people interested in starting and growing businesses.

The initiative has been providing eligible beneficiaries with startup capital and business support intended to help them establish income-generating activities.

Ruto announced plans for another phase targeting at least 200,000 young people interested in entrepreneurship. He did not, however, disclose when the new phase would begin or explain how applicants would be selected.

The proposed business-support expansion and the internship programme are aimed at different groups of young people. While the internship initiative focuses on graduates seeking workplace experience, NYOTA targets those looking to build businesses.

The latest announcements come as youth unemployment and the difficulty of securing a first job remain major concerns for Kenyan households.

If implemented as outlined, the additional internship places could offer thousands of young people an opportunity to develop professional skills while earning a monthly stipend. The programme’s actual impact will depend on its implementation, the availability of placements and whether participants can use the experience to secure longer-term employment.

For now, prospective applicants should rely on official government announcements for confirmed application details rather than assume that recruitment has already opened.
