Ruto Breaks Silence After Deadly Accident That Killed 22 People, Sends This Message
President William Ruto has directed transport and security enforcement agencies to conduct thorough inspections of all public service vehicles (PSVs) nationwide following a head-on collision near Mtito Andei that claimed 23 lives.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Head of State expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to the 16 survivors receiving treatment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital.
Describing the tragedy as a severe loss for the nation, President Ruto urged motorists especially long-distance passenger vehicle operators to strictly observe traffic regulations to prevent further carnage.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:00 AM at Kanga, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Makueni County, when a bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International carrying mourners returning to Mombasa collided head-on with an oncoming commercial lorry.
Initial assessments from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and traffic police indicate that an improper overtaking maneuver may have caused the crash.
The presidential directive places renewed focus on roadworthiness standards, speed governor compliance, and routine vehicle inspections for public transport operators across Kenya’s major transport corridors.
