NTSA Explains What Caused Mtito Andei Accident That Left 22 People Dead

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has explained the possible cause of the devastating road accident that claimed at least 22 lives at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Sunday, October 25.

According to NTSA, the accident involved a public service vehicle and a commercial vehicle that collided head-on, resulting in multiple fatalities and leaving several other passengers injured.

In its preliminary findings, the authority identified improper overtaking as a possible contributing factor, suggesting that a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre may have preceded the deadly collision.

NTSA clarified that investigations are ongoing, with its crash investigation team working alongside police officers to establish exactly what happened before the two vehicles collided.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicles collided head-on and suggest that improper overtaking may have contributed to the crash,” the authority stated.

The incident left at least 22 people dead, while several survivors sustained injuries and were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The authority expressed condolences to families and friends who lost their loved ones, while wishing those receiving medical attention a speedy recovery.

NTSA further urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, exercise caution and avoid dangerous overtaking manoeuvres that could endanger other road users.

The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway remains one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, connecting the capital to the coastal region and serving thousands of passengers and commercial vehicles daily.
