Ruto Responds Over Claims His Govt Plans to Ban IEBC From Livestreaming Election Results
President William Ruto has dismissed claims that his administration intends to stop the livestreaming of election results, accusing opposition leaders of misleading Kenyans over proposed changes to the country’s electoral laws.
Speaking during a church service at AIC Kasina in Mwingi town on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Ruto defended the proposed amendments to the Elections Act, insisting that they would not take away the public’s ability to follow election results as they are announced.
The President expressed frustration over allegations that the government was planning to outlaw livestreaming, arguing that such claims were intended to create confusion, particularly among young Kenyans.
“I have seen propagandists try to create propaganda around election laws that livestreaming has been banned. Nonsense,” Ruto said.
He maintained that access to election results was a right that should be protected, questioning the motivation behind suggestions that Kenyans could be denied the opportunity to follow the electoral process.
“Results are a right of Kenyans. The sooner Kenyans get to know the results of our elections, the better for our country,” he stated.
Ruto further challenged those spreading the allegations to explain why they believed livestreaming would be prohibited under the proposed legal changes.
“Why would anyone want to stop live-streaming of results? It’s a right of Kenyans,” the Head of State added.
His remarks come days after the National Assembly passed the Elections (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, which seeks to introduce changes to the legal framework governing elections in Kenya.
Among its provisions is a requirement for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to transmit presidential election results electronically within two hours after their declaration at polling stations.
The legislation has attracted public and political attention over how election results will be transmitted and made accessible to voters.
