Tragedy at Kilindini: How Brave Mombasa CID Boss Was Shot Dead Over Sh4M Bribe
The killing of former Mombasa Port Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Hassan Ahmed Abdillahi remains a disturbing case involving allegations of corruption, drug trafficking and the targeting of law enforcement officers.
On the night of December 31, 2005, Ahmed was reportedly ambushed by gunmen outside his apartment in the Ganjoni area of Mombasa as residents prepared to celebrate the New Year. The attackers shot him at close range before fleeing in his vehicle, leaving him dead at the scene.
According to accounts attributed to a former investigator, Ahmed had rejected a reported KSh 4 million bribe intended to persuade him to abandon a high-profile investigation. The alleged payment was said to have been connected to efforts to prevent the prosecution of individuals suspected of involvement in organised criminal activities.
Before his death, Ahmed had reportedly intercepted 39 transit containers at Kilindini Port suspected of being linked to an international network involving narcotics trafficking and tax evasion. Intelligence reports were also said to have raised concerns about the possible use of the port as a transit point for illicit drugs.
The investigation allegedly exposed the detective to considerable pressure and threats from individuals believed to have influence within powerful circles. Despite those challenges, he reportedly continued pursuing the case.
Following the killing, homicide detectives from Nairobi arrested several suspects, including individuals associated with port operations. However, according to the available account, the individuals alleged to have masterminded the assassination were never convicted.
The case has continued to draw attention to the risks faced by investigators handling organised crime, particularly when allegations involve influential individuals and lucrative criminal networks.
Ahmed is remembered in these accounts as an officer who pursued sensitive investigations despite the dangers involved. However, claims concerning the alleged bribe, the suspected drug-trafficking network and the identities of those behind his killing should be assessed against verified investigative records and court findings.
