“Sifuna Is Nothing But a Windbag,” Prominent Lawyer Criticises Nairobi Senator

Makau Mutua, a renowned professor and lawyer, has ignited a fresh political storm after launching a blistering attack on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over his engagement with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at Wamunyoro.

Mutua questioned Sifuna’s political consistency, arguing that the senator’s current association with Gachagua contradicts his earlier criticism of the former Deputy President.

Mutua’s remarks centred on what he described as a dramatic political contradiction, recalling Sifuna’s previous condemnation of Gachagua over issues involving corruption, tribalism, ethnic divisions, hatred and alleged abuse of office.

He questioned how Sifuna could now engage politically with a leader he had previously criticised so fiercely, placing the senator’s principles and political judgement under renewed scrutiny.

The explosive exchange comes as Kenya’s opposition landscape continues to experience shifting alliances and strategic engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With leaders exploring possible partnerships to challenge President William Ruto, meetings between former political adversaries have become a major subject of public debate.

However, Mutua’s criticism has not gone unanswered, with some Kenyans turning the spotlight back on the professor’s own political journey. Critics accused him of betraying the late Raila Odinga and questioned his decision to serve as an adviser to Ruto after previously expressing opposition to working with the President.

Other commenters argued that the accusations of corruption, tribalism, ethnic division and abuse of office should also be directed at Ruto’s administration, insisting that political leaders must be subjected to the same standards they use to scrutinise their opponents.

The escalating exchange has consequently transformed the debate into a wider confrontation over political consistency, personal convictions and shifting alliances.

As the 2027 electoral contest approaches, Mutua’s remarks have reignited questions about whether political leaders can maintain their stated principles while pursuing new partnerships in Kenya’s increasingly unpredictable political arena.
