Meru Lorry Driver Acclaimed for Steering Burning Vehicle Away from Homes

MERU, Kenya — A commercial driver in Meru County has earned widespread praise after risking his life to steer a burning truck away from residential properties and businesses before steering it into a nearby river.

According to reports, driver Mathew Kaugiria was transporting a full load of dry hay on Friday when the cargo suddenly caught fire. Rather than abandoning the vehicle immediately, official statements and witness accounts indicate that Kaugiria drove the flaming truck about 500 meters away from crowded estates to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

A video circulating online shows the fully engulfed lorry moving down a public road before plunging into a river, where the flames were eventually contained.

Reports suggest Kaugiria sustained burns to his face and hand during the incident. He was subsequently rescued and transported to a local medical facility for treatment.

Speaking from his recovery bed, Kaugiria stated that he has no regrets regarding his decision, citing a paramount concern for public safety over his personal well-being. Local officials, including Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, praised Kaugiria’s courage and selfless sacrifice.https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1C8oH9VPmv/
