Number of People Confirmed Dead After Deadly Road Accident at Mtito Andei
Details have emerged on the number of people confirmed dead after a bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck at Kanga, outside Mtito Andei along the Mombasa Highway, leaving several others injured.
According to sources, 20 people have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment following the horrific crash involving a bus carrying church members who were travelling to a function.
The church bus, which was reportedly carrying middle-aged and elderly passengers, was heading to Mombasa for a church function when the accident occurred.
The group was travelling along the busy Mombasa Highway when the bus reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle in the Tsavo area.
During the manoeuvre, the bus collided head-on with an oncoming truck transporting goods to Nairobi.
The impact was devastating, leaving several passengers dead and others trapped inside the wreckage.
A gruesome scene was witnessed at the accident site, with the church bus reportedly cut in half by the force of the collision.
Bus seats were scattered across the road and surrounding area, while the wreckage left little room for passengers to escape the impact.
Bodies were reportedly scattered around the crash scene as emergency responders and other motorists arrived to assist the injured.
The few survivors were left traumatised by the horrifying incident, which turned what was expected to be a joyful journey to a church gathering into a tragedy.
The injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention, with some reportedly suffering severe injuries that required urgent treatment.
Rescue efforts were also focused on helping those who may have been trapped in the damaged vehicles.
The crash is likely to raise fresh concerns about road safety along the Mombasa Highway, particularly in areas where motorists attempt dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.
The highway is frequently used by passenger buses, private vehicles and heavy commercial trucks transporting goods between Mombasa and Nairobi.
Overtaking on busy highways can be dangerous, especially when drivers misjudge the distance of oncoming vehicles or fail to leave enough room to return to their lane.
Head-on collisions involving heavy trucks and passenger buses often result in devastating consequences because of the force of the impact.
