Malala Announces Monday Meeting With Kalonzo, What DCP Wants From Him Raises Interest
Kenya’s opposition leaders are stepping up efforts to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala announcing plans to meet Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Monday to seek his support for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions.
The planned meeting comes as opposition figures explore ways to agree on a common candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.
The discussions have gained momentum following a recent meeting between DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua and leaders associated with Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi faction at Wamunyoro in Nyeri County.
Malala’s latest move is part of a wider effort to bring together opposition leaders with different political interests and ambitions.
The DCP deputy leader has been advocating for Sifuna to work with Gachagua, arguing that support from the Mount Kenya region would be important to the senator’s chances of winning the presidency.
The planned engagement with Kalonzo is expected to widen these discussions and bring the Wiper leader into conversations about a possible joint opposition ticket.
Kalonzo remains an important figure in opposition politics because of his political experience and Wiper’s presence in the wider opposition camp.
Gachagua has also invited Kalonzo to his Wamunyoro residence for discussions on opposition unity with the 2027 presidential contest expected to feature prominently in the talks.
The proposed alliance faces the challenge of agreeing on a presidential candidate who can attract support from different regions while keeping the participating political groups united.
Although Sifuna has received backing from leaders within the Linda Mwananchi movement the wider opposition has yet to settle on a single candidate through an agreed selection process.
Malala’s efforts suggest that the DCP leadership is willing to engage other opposition figures before final decisions are made about the presidential ticket.
The discussions could also help establish whether the leaders are prepared to support a candidate from another political camp rather than pursue separate presidential ambitions.
For Kalonzo, the planned talks provide an opportunity to discuss his party’s place in the emerging opposition arrangement.
However, his position on supporting Sifuna’s presidential bid will need to be established through his own statements or an official agreement.
With the August 2027 General Election approaching, the coming discussions are likely to shape the next stage of opposition negotiations as leaders seek a common strategy against President William Ruto.
