Governor Mutula Confirms Over 20 Dead in Bus Trailer Crash at Mtito Andei
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has confirmed that more than 20 people died in a crash between a passenger bus and a trailer at Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Sunday morning, October 25. Survivors are being treated at Makindu Hospital.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has spoken out following a fatal road accident at Mtito Andei, confirming that more than 20 people lost their lives when a passenger bus and a trailer collided on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Sunday morning, October 25.
In a brief statement shared on Sunday, the governor said the survivors of the crash are receiving medical attention at Makindu Hospital.
“A fatal road traffic accident at Mtito Andei, on Mombasa Road. Over 20 fatalities. The survivors are receiving attention at Makindu Hospital,” Mutula said.
The statement gives the first clear picture of the scale of the tragedy, although the identities of the victims, the full number of injured passengers and the exact circumstances that led to the collision had not been released in the governor’s initial update.
Mtito Andei sits on one of the most important transport routes in the country. The Nairobi-Mombasa corridor carries thousands of travellers and hundreds of commercial vehicles every day, moving people and goods between the capital and the Coast. That constant mix of passenger buses and heavy trucks is exactly what makes the road so deadly when something goes wrong.
Sunday’s crash is also not an isolated event on this highway. Earlier in October, Governor Mutula called on the national government to speed up plans to dual the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway after another deadly crash at Salama that claimed 17 lives.
At the time, he also pushed the Kenya National Highways Authority to introduce safety measures at sections of the road known to be accident black spots. Two deadly mass-casualty crashes on the same corridor within a single month is likely to intensify that pressure.
The highway has been the scene of repeated serious accidents over the years, prompting constant calls from leaders and road users for better infrastructure, dualled carriageways and stricter enforcement against speeding and careless overtaking.
For now, attention turns to Makindu Hospital, where survivors are fighting to recover, and to authorities who are expected to release more information about the victims and the cause of the crash as investigations continue.
With over 20 families now in mourning, the question many Kenyans are asking is how many more crashes it will take before the highway is fixed.
Do you think the government should prioritise dualling the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway now?
