Heavy Rains And Strong Winds Set To Hit Nairobi And Over 40 Counties This Week
Kenyans living in the Coast, Northeastern, Western, Rift Valley, Central and Southeastern Lowlands regions have been told to prepare for heavy rains. Nairobi is also on the list. The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority issued the warning on Friday.
The weatherman says more than 20 millimetres of rainfall is expected between October 24 and October 30. The rains will come with strong winds exceeding 46 kilometres per hour. Coastal, eastern and northern areas are likely to feel the winds most.
Affected counties include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo. Others are Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, Narok, Kajiado, Machakos and Makueni. Parts of Nairobi will also be hit.
Residents have been urged to watch out for flash floods. Floodwaters may appear even in places where it has not rained heavily, especially in downstream areas. Poor visibility is also expected.
Kenyans have been advised to avoid sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms. People in hot regions should stay hydrated.
Kenya Met also predicts ocean waves higher than two metres on Sunday. Fishers and mariners have been asked to take extra care while at sea.
The warning comes as Kenyans wait for the El Niño-enhanced October to December rain season. It was expected to start in some areas by the second or third week of October. The onset has been delayed in several regions. Some parts of the country continue to experience sunny and dry weather with unusually high temperatures.
