Heavy Rains Expected in Several Parts of Kenya as KMD Issues 7-Day Forecast, Warns of Flash Floods
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country over the next seven days, urging residents to remain alert to possible flash floods and poor visibility.
The weather forecast issued on Sunday, October 25, indicates that some areas could receive more than 20 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours.
The affected regions include the Coast, Northeastern, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Central Highlands, and parts of the Southeastern Lowlands.
Counties expected to experience the rainfall include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu in the Coast region. Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo are also among the areas listed in the forecast.
In Western Kenya, the affected counties include Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.
West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nakuru, Kericho and Bomet are also expected to experience rainfall.
The forecast further identifies several counties in the Central Highlands and surrounding areas, including Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru.
Parts of Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Narok and Kajiado are also expected to receive rainfall during the forecast period.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to exercise caution because heavy downpours could trigger flash floods, including in locations that do not experience intense rainfall directly. Water may flow into downstream areas from places experiencing heavy precipitation.
Poor visibility during rainy conditions could also affect road users, making it important for motorists and pedestrians to remain cautious.
Residents have additionally been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms to reduce exposure to lightning strikes.
Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected to persist in some parts of the country, particularly in northern Kenya. Residents in these areas have been urged to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
The forecast also warns of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots across coastal, eastern and northern regions. These winds may be accompanied by gusts.
