Bawumia Targets Pharmaceutical Industry Expansion As He Engages Pharmaceutical Society Of Ghana
According to reports by Joy News on October 24, 2026 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with the leadership of the
Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) at the PSG House in Accra as part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders on Ghana’s development priorities.
The meeting focused on exploring opportunities to strengthen Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry and position the country as West Africa’s leading hub for pharmaceutical production.
The engagement provided an opportunity for Dr. Bawumia and representatives of the society to discuss practical measures that could improve the sector’s performance, encourage local drug manufacturing and create an enabling environment for pharmaceutical businesses to expand.
A major issue discussed during the meeting was the need to increase local pharmaceutical production. Strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity could help Ghana reduce its dependence on imported medicines, improve the availability of essential drugs
and create opportunities for investment in the pharmaceutical sector. Expanding local production could also contribute to job creation and support the growth of businesses involved in medicine manufacturing and distribution.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of streamlining regulatory processes to make it easier for pharmaceutical companies to operate while maintaining the necessary standards for medicine safety, quality and effectiveness.
Efficient regulation could help reduce unnecessary delays, encourage investment and enable local manufacturers to respond more effectively to the healthcare needs of the population.
Another important area of focus was improving support for pharmacists, who play a critical role in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system. Pharmacists contribute to the safe use of medicines, patient education and the effective management of pharmaceutical services.
Providing them with better professional support and opportunities could strengthen the quality of healthcare available to the public. The meeting further underscored the importance of stronger public-private partnerships in advancing the pharmaceutical industry.
Cooperation between government, professional associations, local manufacturers and private investors could help mobilise resources, promote innovation and address challenges confronting the sector.
Dr. Bawumia’s engagement with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana forms part of his broader stakeholder consultations aimed at gathering perspectives from professional groups and industry leaders on issues affecting the country’s development.
