Kofi Bentil Blast Alan Kyerematen Over Return to NPP

Kofi Bentil, Vice President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, has expressed strong doubts about Alan Kyerematen’s chances of returning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to lead the party in the 2028 general elections.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on October 24, 2026, Mr. Bentil rejected the prospect of the former trade minister making a comeback as the party’s presidential candidate, declaring that such an outcome would not happen.

In his remarks, Mr. Bentil questioned the basis of Mr. Kyerematen’s expectation that the NPP would welcome him back and entrust him with its leadership ahead of the next national elections. He reportedly reinforced his position with a firm statement ruling out the possibility.

His comments come after Mr. Kyerematen indicated that he would consider returning to the NPP if the party invited him to contest as its flagbearer. The declaration has renewed discussions about the possibility of reconciliation between the party and the former presidential aspirant.

Mr. Kyerematen, who left the NPP after years of involvement in its internal politics, has since pursued an independent political path. His possible return would therefore raise questions about the party’s willingness to accommodate former members and the conditions under which such a move could take place.

The situation is further complicated by the NPP’s existing leadership arrangements, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia serving as the party’s flagbearer. Any consideration of an alternative candidate could potentially reopen discussions about succession, internal competition and the party’s strategy for the 2028 polls.

Mr. Bentil’s intervention has added another perspective to the debate over the NPP’s political future. His remarks reflect doubts about whether the party would be prepared to reverse its current course and hand its presidential leadership to a former member who departed following disagreements over its internal processes.

However, the report did not indicate that the NPP had formally considered or rejected an invitation to Mr. Kyerematen. It also did not establish whether the party’s leadership had held discussions with him about a possible comeback.

As of the time of publication, no response from Mr. Kyerematen or his representatives to Mr. Bentil’s comments had been reported.

The debate is expected to remain relevant as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2028 general elections, with leadership, unity and candidate selection likely to feature prominently in the NPP’s preparations.
