Thousands of Jobs at Risk as Kenya Dissolves 72 Companies, Targets 68 More
Thousands of Kenyans could face job losses following the government’s decision to dissolve 72 companies and target another 68 for possible closure within the next three months. The Registrar of Companies announced the decision in two separate Kenya Gazette notices published on Friday, October 23, 2026. The move has raised concerns about its possible impact on employment and businesses across the country.Deputy Registrar of Companies Hiram Gachugi confirmed that the 72 companies had been dissolved and their names removed from the official Register of Companies. The dissolution took effect on October 23, 2026. However, the notices did not reveal whether the affected businesses were still operating or how many employees could lose their jobs.
The dissolved companies operated in different sectors, including real estate, construction, healthcare, energy, technology, transport, hospitality and agriculture. Some were involved in solar energy, water purification, property development, textile production, media, education, food processing and business consultancy.
Meanwhile, another 68 companies have been listed for possible dissolution. The affected businesses include those involved in property development, automotive services, logistics, renewable energy, hospitality, retail, construction and investment. The Registrar has given them three months to explain why their names should not be removed from the register.
According to the Companies Act, businesses can be removed from the register through different legal procedures, including voluntary applications and action initiated by the Registrar. However, the notices did not specify the reasons behind the latest dissolutions or the proposed removal of the additional companies.
The latest development comes about a month after the Registrar announced the dissolution of 176 companies in September 2026, while another 155 faced possible removal. Once a company is dissolved, it ceases to exist as a registered legal entity unless it is restored through the procedures provided under the law.
