Famous TV and Radio Presnter Says Her Father Told Her to Get Out of His Room During His Final Days
Veteran broadcaster Joyce Gituro has opened up about being turned away by her father as he lay on his deathbed, a rejection that she says still weighs heavily on her.
Speaking on Dr Ofweneke’s show, a visibly emotional Gituro said she found the courage to visit her ailing father when she was already an established face in Kenyan entertainment, appearing on the Tausi TV show and working in radio.
She said she did not know the root of the tension between them but felt compelled to make peace.
Gituro, who is her father’s 23rd child and her mother’s fifth, said the estrangement left her puzzled. She told her mother she wanted to reconcile and went to her father to seek forgiveness. His response was devastating, she said.
“He told me to get out. He said just go,” she recounted. Her mother later suggested that he may have been in pain at the time, and Gituro said her mother always found a way to shield her from hurt.
She also recalled a Christmas visit to the village, when she arrived on December 23 and her father questioned why she had come.
While her siblings celebrated with him, she quietly left with her daughter and spent the holiday at her niece’s home. She noted that he showed no such coldness towards the grandchildren, playing with all of them equally, including her daughter.
What troubles her most, Gituro said, is that her father died without ever explaining why their relationship was so strained. “For me, my dad dying without telling me why we had issues brings lots of regret,” she said.
