New Details Show Contractor of Iconic Nairobi Tower is from Uganda
Thousands of people walk past Times Tower in Nairobi’s central business district every day, yet few know about the Ugandan businessman whose construction firm helped put up the skyscraper.
James Mugoya Isabirye founded Mugoya Construction & Engineering Limited, the company credited with building Times Tower and Social Security House, better known as the NSSF Building on Bishop Road.
The firm’s portfolio also includes Hazina Estate, Moi High School Kabarak, Kabarak University and the Kisumu Provincial Headquarters.
Born in Uganda, Mugoya moved to Kenya to study civil engineering at the University of Nairobi and graduated in October 1971.
He later set up his construction company, which grew considerably during the administration of former president Daniel arap Moi. Media reports have described him as a politically connected contractor who benefited from close ties to government during that period.
According to Who Owns Kenya, Mugoya’s company carried out the construction of Times Tower, while the design was the work of Triad Architects. The contract was awarded in 1992 and the project was completed in 2000.
At 38 floors, the building became the headquarters of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and was among the tallest structures in Kenya when it opened. The NSSF Building, on the other hand, was designed by J.E.D. Nyaseme & Associates.
